Our Commitment Through Safe Sanctuaries
At Wayne Church, we believe every child, youth, vulnerable adult, volunteer, staff member, and family deserves to experience God’s love in an environment that is safe, welcoming, and filled with grace. Through our Safe Sanctuaries ministry, we are committed to creating spaces where faith can grow, relationships can flourish, and every person is treated with dignity, respect, and care. Protecting those entrusted to us is not simply a policy. It is a promise rooted in our Christian faith and our calling to love one another as Christ loves us.
Volunteer Requirements
Before serving with children, youth, or vulnerable adults at Wayne Church, every volunteer must:
- Be an active participant at Wayne Church for at least six months, or provide a letter of recommendation from a previous church if serving sooner.
- Complete a Volunteer Application with three non related references.
- Successfully complete all required Pennsylvania background clearances.
- Complete Wayne Church Safe Sanctuaries training before serving.
- Sign a Volunteer Covenant affirming they have read, understand, and agree to follow the Wayne Church Safe Sanctuaries Policy.
- Participate in ongoing training and renew required clearances in accordance with Pennsylvania law.
Two Adult Rule
Wayne Church follows the Two Adult Rule for all ministries involving children and youth.
- At least two unrelated, approved adults are present during church sponsored activities.
- One adult is never alone with one child or youth.
- Transportation follows the same accountability standards whenever possible.
- Digital communication with minors follows the same principles of transparency and accountability.
Age Guidelines
To promote safe and appropriate leadership:
- Adults serving as ministry leaders must be at least 18 years old.
- Adult leaders should be at least five years older than the age group they supervise.
- Youth may assist in ministry but may never supervise children or youth alone.
- Two approved adult leaders must always remain responsible for supervision.
Photography, Social Media, and Digital Ministry
Wayne Church is committed to protecting children’s privacy online.
- Personal information is never shared with photographs or videos.
- Children are never identified by name alongside images posted online.
- Photos and videos are shared only with appropriate parent or guardian permission.
- Livestreams and online content are designed to protect the privacy and dignity of children and youth.
- Wayne Church follows Safe Sanctuaries best practices for digital ministry.
Reporting a Concern
If you observe or suspect abuse, neglect, inappropriate conduct, or behavior that places a child, youth, or vulnerable adult at risk:
- Ensure the immediate safety of the individual.
- Follow all Pennsylvania mandatory reporting requirements.
- Notify the Senior Pastor or Director of Christian Education as soon as possible.
- Concerns will be handled promptly, confidentially, and in accordance with Wayne Church’s Safe Sanctuaries Policy.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Through annual training, careful screening, ongoing policy review, and shared accountability, we strive to ensure every ministry reflects Christ’s love and care.

Clearances
If you have these 3 clearances from work, your child’s school, or other organization, and they’re less than 5 years old, Wayne UMC will gladly accept copies.

If you HAVEN’T lived in PA continuously the past 10 years and you don’t have an FBI Fingerprint record less than 5 years old, please go to this website to register for a date and time to have your fingerprints taken.
If you HAVE been a resident of PA for the past 10 years consecutively and don’t have an FBI fingerprint record less than 5 years old, you may complete and have notarized a copy of the FBI Waiver Affidavit found here.
Mandated Reporter Training
We require Safe Sanctuary training be done once a year and offer a couple of sessions throughout the year. Check with the church office to see when the next 30 minute session is being held. If you have completed this training in the past 1 year, please give a copy of your certificate of completion to the church office.
If you have not done the training in person at Wayne Church, please go to the site linked in the button. Click on Registration link, fill in your info, click on Welcome link, enter username and password, click on Course link, watch 3-hour video, then print Certificate of Completion and give to the church office.
